The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s state Transportation Commission awarded federal grant monies to the Millersburg Train Station for the enhancement this historic transportation property. The funding was part of the federal Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, known as TEA-21.

The Montoursville Area School District received a $35,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (PA DCED) for a photovoltaic solar energy system as part of their renovations to the C.E. McCall Middle School. The system is to be installed on the roof of south facing light scoops in the Library, creating a “Zero-Energy” space from this former underutilized outdoor courtyard.

The township is interested renovating the buildings along this portion of East Main Street, to represent the historic nature of the street, as the buildings would have appeared in the years between 1910 and 1930. This $7.5 million project is partly funded by $2.0 million in monies from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s RACP Grant program.

There was a desire to return the present day storefronts along South Baltimore Street to their 1890’s – 1930’s appearance, which was considered the height of business in Dillsburg, as well as improve and beautify the existing streetscape. Many of the original buildings remain from this era, although their former facades are masked by modern coverings, altered storefronts, several coats of paint, and layers of dirt and debris.

The Hazleton “Castle” Auditorium renovation, newly renamed the Alice C. Wiltsie Performing Arts Center, received a grant from the state as part of the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP). Awarded under Governor Rendell, Hazleton was awarded $1,000,000.

Plainfield Elementary School

From PA DCED and Cumberland County, the Plainfield Elementary School was awarded a $35,000 grant and $50,000 grant, respectively, for a photovoltaic solar energy system planned for this new LEED Silver school, which was to replace an existing structure. The District was also approved for an $180,000 Zero-Interest loan for a geothermal HVAC system.

The rehabilitation adhered to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and the structure was interpreted to its tavern era, between the years 1790 – 1859. Applications for state funding was provided and the PA Historical & Museum Commission awarded a KHP Grant for $70,000.
