Although the Windber Area School District was experiencing a significant decline in student population (with excess capacity three times the projected enrollment), at the same time, the aging school facility could no longer meet the educational goals of the District. McKissick Architects developed a strategy to alleviate the District's excess outdated space by demolition, renovation, and addition. The renovation was a challenge amid its tight “in-town” building site. The site was reconfigured to improve access and safety, with a new bus loop separated from the auto circulation lanes, and the addition of 112 parking spaces. The district administration offices were relocated to one wing of the building. The construction of a single two-story addition knit together the remaining building areas and feature the Knowledge Commons. This area brings together the Guidance office, Library, Administration, Faculty Planning, Dining, and Small Group Study spaces for a combined area at the heart of the school. Other renovations included converting former locker rooms into an 8,300 SF multi-lab STEM Center.
